Jaw Pain During Sleep
If you have never experienced this pain, you can count yourself as one of the privileged ones. Suffers of intense jaw pain should consult a dentist as soon as possible, as it could be an indication of a serious problem. Causes of Jaw Pain
It could be that the person suffering from this pain has a disorder, known as temporomandibular Joint Disorder. It affects the joints around the jaw and causes throbbing and aching to the jaw and areas around it. However, there is no need to panic because often this disorder is only temporary.
Another major cause of jaw pain is from clenching or grinding while you are asleep. This is a difficult problem to diagnose because it happens subconsciously – the root cause is often stress. Once again, those dreaded cavities are causing major problems – if a cavity goes deep enough into the tooth it can cause pain to radiate around the jaw area. Jaw Pain – Is It Harmful?
When the body is sending pain signals to a specific area, it is to warn you that there is a problem. Therefore, if your jaw is in intense pain it can be harmful to your whole mouth. However, it may only be harmful over a period of time. This means that early detection and prevention will avoid any harm that might be caused. The condition is called Bruxism, this is where you grind or clench your teeth subconsciously – whether when you are awake or asleep. And a severe case of this can be harmful and lead to jaw disorders, headaches, damaged teeth and other problems.
Prevention Is Key
If we know that the pain we are experience is most probably causing us harm, would we not want to do something to prevent it? Of course we would, because if prevention is avoided then much more serious and damaging problems will occur. So, if clenching and grinding teeth causes the pain then this is the problem that needs to be prevented. Here are a few ways to stop subconsciously stop clenching and grinding your teeth:
- Think positive and let go of anxiety
- Ask for help – when someone is making you aware of a problem then it is much easier to fix it.
- Get a mouth guard, even if only for when you sleep to prevent you from grinding your teeth.
